Dr. Gordon Neufeld created a model of attachment that provides us with so much more insight and direction than Bowlby’s secure/insecure/avoidant attachment model. In the Neufeld model, we see how attachment can unfold in the first six years of life, with each root deepening the connection and allowing for more spacious connection–if attachment goes down to the sixth root, there is room to be both deeply attached and completely individuated. This model helps parents to see where their children might be stuck and can guide the types of “attachment invitations” we offer.

If you would like to more deeply understand these attachment roots, this ninety-minute video explains the model in depth.
