This summer, join together with Lisa and other parents for parenting classes offered "summer camp style."
Imagine gathering with friends, warming yourself around a (figurative) "camp fire," enjoying home baked goods (both gluten free and gluten filled), hot tea and coffee while immersing yourself in Dr. Gordon Neufeld's transformative parenting paradigm with Lisa's expert guidance and support.
Lisa is offering two sessions of parenting summer camp this July, each exploring a different topic. Each session runs Monday-Thursday.
You can enroll in Session 1 or Session 2 as stand-alone sessions, or join us for both sessions!
For more details on the individual sessions, click the links on the right.
Session 1: The Alpha Child (offered for the first time ever in Portland!) will cover how to best parent the bossy, controlling, stubborn and anxious child.
This 10-hour course will meet daily from Monday 7/22 through Thursday 7/25 at All Saints Episcopal Church: 4033 SE Woodstock in Portland, and includes an 80-page study guide created by The Neufeld Institute.
In Session 2: Making Sense of Adolescence, we will explore how to best help children while remaining close and connected during their transition into adolescence and puberty.
This 18-hour course will meet daily from Monday 7/29 through Thursday 8/01 at All Saints Episcopal Church: 4033 SE Woodstock in Portland, and includes a 100-page study guide created by The Neufeld Institute.
Do you wish for more connection, ease and joy in your family?
As a parent consultant, I work from the perspective that holds the full realization of each child's potential as the ultimate goal. Together we will journey-- using teaching, metaphor, story and humor--towards both increased insight into your child and increased understanding of how to best support their development.
It usually turns out that in supporting our children in reaching their full potential we as parents move closer to fulfilling ours. I would be honored to support you in this transformative process.
Areas in which I can provide support:
- Frustration, Aggression & Tantrums
- Resistance and defiance
- Bossy, controlling "Alpha" children
- Sibling fighting and rivalry
- School Behavior Issues
- Attention Problems
- Adolescent Issues
One of Lisa's greatest strengths is presenting material in a way that it can be used without a lot of practice. I notice immediate benefits at home after one of her classes. She seems to continuously study because she always finds new information that fits the topic at hand. I appreciate her mix of teaching, using guided meditations (one from a few years ago that I use to this day) personal mantras and experiences that make her classes relatable, down to earth and the most worthwhile parenting help I have found.
I recently took Simplicity Parenting 101 and loved it. I found it to be a parenting approach that is in alignment wth my deeper sense of relationship with my daughter. It's drawn my attention to being more present and creating a very valuable rhythm in our lives. Lisa is an amazing teacher; her stories bring simplicity parenting to life and create a vivid reference point for the teachings. I highly recommend her courses and, personally, I can't get enough of them!
Taking Simplicity Parenting 101 has been one of the best things I've done for myself and my family. The recommendations have been simple, yet have had profound effects on our family life.
Lisa's Simplicity Parenting 101 and Simplicity Summer Workshop have had an incredible impact on my parenting. I became a keen observer of my children's play and learned how and when we needed to make shifts in our activities. This had an extremely positive impact on my children. I saw less meltdowns and sibling conflicts! I've read lots of parenting books and have taking a couple other classes but I have to say, Lisa's class gave me some serious tools for my parenting toolbox that I have come to heavily rely on!
Lisa was always very responsive and thoughtful; she listened well and gave excellent advice. I learned how to slow down and connect more with my son.
The understanding of relationship is infinitely more important than the search for any plan of action.
Parent consulting sessions are available at my office in Milwaukie or long-distance via phone or Skype.
I work with parents of children of all ages; from birth through adult children.
Cost is $95 per 55-minute session. If you need financial assistance, please let me know.
I look forward to helping you create more joy, connection and ease in your family!
When my son had his “Handing Over” ceremony last month marking his transition out of the “Early Childhood” realm and into “The Grades” (these are the general terms used in Waldorf Schools for the nursery and kindergarten classes and the first through eighth grade classes), I felt so much appreciation for his teachers and all…Read more...
For years now, I’ve been reading my boys Carry Me Mama by Monica Devine. I’ve always liked it for it’s beautiful illustrations (by Pauline Paquin), simple storyline and depiction of Inuit culture. Recently, however, I’ve come to appreciate it for another reason– the eponymous “Mama” is such a clear example of good parenting. By “good”…Read more...

When parents come into my office reporting that parenting is impossibly difficult, it usually turns out that their child is what Dr. Gordon Neufeld calls an "Alpha child." Alpha children are bossy, controlling, stubborn, anxious and, yes, very difficult to parent.
Attachment is hierarchical and Nature's plan is for parents and teachers to be the providers and for children to be the dependents. With Alpha children, however, Nature's plan is turned on its head. Alpha children believe that they are in the lead and it doesn't feel right for them to follow or depend.
In this ten hour course, we will explore all aspects of the Alpha child: the qualities of an Alpha child, how the roles become inverted, what these children need from us, and, finally, how to get back into right relationship with the Alpha children in our lives.
I am so excited to announce a new Handmade Parenting offering: personalized group classes!
What are they?
These are small classes (2-6 parents) in which we will address exactly the issue(s) that your group is interested in!
How do they work?
You gather the group, decide the topic and we’ll find a time and space to meet. If your group has 4 or fewer parents in it, we can meet in my (small!) office; if your group is larger than that, we can meet at one of your homes.
Crossing the bridge from childhood to adulthood has never been so daunting. The time of adolescence is longer than ever and yet society today offers little support in understanding or facilitating this transition.
This course is designed to be used by parents, grandparents, teachers, administrators, professionals – anyone who desires to make sense of adolescence. Parents of pre- teens will find this course invaluable as preparation for what lies ahead.
The objective of this course is to make sense of adolescents from inside out.
Every adolescent is an individual of course, but there are some common dynamics that affect all adolescents. Understanding what these dynamics are can provide the keys for knowing how to deal with the problems that may arise.
In the The Vital Connection, one of Dr. Gordon Neufeld's first and flagship courses, we will explore the attachment relationship between parent and child.
We will move well beyond the superficial platitudes and the focus on "baby bonding" that are often used when discussing attachment and instead will go deep into understanding all facets of this bond and it's significance for our relationships, not only with our babies, but with our preschoolers, our middle-schoolers and our teens.
Can't make it to a class or workshop?
I offer personalized support to parents around many parenting issues.
Some of my areas of expertise include:
- Creating stronger family rhythms
- Setting up bedrooms and play spaces to cultivate deep play
- Increasing family connection
- Creating meal plans
- Preserving childhood
- Teaching warm, firm and kind limit-setting and discipline

The escalating level of anxiety in our children begs for an explanation as well as a solution. This class, created by Dr. Gordon Neufeld and taught by Lisa Weiner, sheds light on this age-old problem, paving the way for natural interventions that can actually get to the root causes as opposed to just managing symptoms. This course brings a fresh and promising perspective to one of our most troubling and perplexing human problems. Although the focus is on children, this enlightening material will benefit anyone suffering from anxiety.
In this 4-week course, developed by The Neufeld Institute as supplement to mainstream “Sex Ed”, we will explore how to support our teens in relating to their unfolding sexuality in a way that is respectful, safe and healthy (for body and heart).
In a culture that is hyper-sexualized and rife with wounding sexual messages, our teens need us to assuredly and protectively guide them through this new territory.
Through the lenses of development, maturation, vulnerability and attachment we will come to better understand what our teens need from us; and we will likely come to understand sexuality in general a bit better along the way.
